Content Consumption: Garbage In, Garbage Out

Today I asked students a few questions...

Journal: 10/23/19

1. What is going on in the world today?

2. What's "trending"?

3. What are the top news stories?

4. What podcasts, news, TV, videos, etc. are you watching/listening to?

5. What are you reading?

6. What worries you? What problem would you like to solve in the world?

Consider this....

I played a clip on the reading habits of Bill Gates
from Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates:
Documentary on Netflix (Start at minute 18).

When I think of Bill Gates, I think of my dad who started his career in computers at Honeywell - owned a couple manufacturing companies and a bottle water company - and ended his career with computers and information systems in Cuyahoga County. He once said, "I wonder if I just stuck with computers, I could have been like Bill Gates."

As a programmer and father, he would often say, "Garbage in, garbage out."

If we were watching bad television, he would be upset with us for wasting our time and not learning. He was always reading a book, the newspapers, and watched the nightly news plus 60 Minutes every Sunday evening.

Remember we are creatures of habit. How are you developing a reading habit?

How does reading help you develop your "Habits of Mind"?

Consider this book.
